Rahul Gandhi may take charge as Cong president soon, hints Moily

Hyderabad: Rahul Gandhi may take charge as Congress president through an “internal election process” as early as next month, senior party leader M Veerappa Moily hinted on Friday.

"Everybody (in Congress) feels it is (his elevation) delayed. Now, he (Rahul) is waiting for organisation elections. He would like to emerge as the president of AICC only out of the election process," PTI quoted him as saying.

Moily charged the BJP with failure to honour election promises and alleged that the economy and exports have sharply declined. "They (NDA government) have failed miserably. This is a worst scenario. The myth of the present NDA government will explode during the Lok Sabha elections in 2019," he said.

On the government favouring bringing petroleum products under the ambit of GST, Moily, the former oil minister, indicated that it would have to be done eventually.

"That (proposal to bring petrol and diesel under GST) cannot be opposed. It has to be brought under the GST today or tomorrow; instead of bringing it in future they have brought it (proposed now). (But) the manner in which they are hiking the petrol and diesel prices is totally unjustified," he said.

Moily also said that states have been opposing the move right from the beginning as they would lose money if it were to be implemented. But bringing petroleum products under GST would be good for the industrial sector.

Congress lashes out at Nitish Kumar, says Bihar CM working as Amit Shah's servant

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday lashed out at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and said that the Bihar Chief Minister was once a respected leader but now he is working as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah's servant.

The statement came in the backdrop of Nitish Kumar's decision to break the grand alliance with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress.

Nitish and senior rebel JD-U leader Sharad Yadav are at loggerheads since the grand alliance was broken in Bihar.

However, the BJP said that it has no concern with what Yadav does, as he has adopted negative politics and will face the consequences in the long run.

"We know that Janata Dal (United) is led by Nitish Kumar ji and this party is an ally of the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). What other leaders do and say is not our concern. Sharad Yadav is getting isolated because he has adopted negative politics and negative politics does not work in the long run," BJP leader Sudhesh Verma said.

Yadav recently launched 'Sanjhi Virsasat Bachao Manch' to oppose alleged divisive politics of the BJP and will be holding a similar programme today.

Meanwhile, Kumar later today will be holding party's national executive meeting in Patna.

Israel to replace metal detectors in Jerusalem with smart surveillance

Jerusalem: Israel decided on Tuesday to remove metal detectors it had placed at the entrance to a holy site in Jerusalem`s Old City and replace them with smart, less obtrusive surveillance means, a Cabinet statement said.

Israel installed metal detectors at entry points to Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem after two police officers were fatally shot on July 14, triggering the bloodiest clashes between Israelis and Palestinians in years.

Tuesday`s decision to remove the metal detector gates was an about-turn after the rightist Netanyahu, wary of being seen to capitulate to Palestinian pressure, said on Sunday the devices would stay put.

But on top of the outbreak of violence mainly in the Jerusalem area, a Palestinian move on Friday by President Mahmoud Abbas to suspend official contacts and international criticism put pressure on Israel.

Netanyahu was further hampered following a fatal shooting incident at the Israeli embassy in Jordan on Sunday when an Israeli security guard was attacked and shot dead two Jordanians.

Jordan is the custodian of Jerusalem`s Muslim holy sites, which Jews revere as the vestige of their two ancient temples and which was among East Jerusalem areas Israel captured in a 1967 war and annexed as its capital in a move not recognised internationally.
